Overview
Cricket is one of the oldest team sports, dating back to 16th-century England, yet it commands a global fanbase of 2.5 billion โ making it the second most-watched sport globally. It is played in three formats: Test cricket (5 days), One Day Internationals (50 overs), and T20 (20 overs).
At its heart, cricket is a contest between bat and ball. The batting team tries to score runs while the bowling team tries to dismiss ten batters. The complexity of swing bowling, spin bowling, DRS reviews, pitch conditions, and batting technique makes cricket one of the most tactically nuanced sports in existence.
The sport carries enormous cultural weight across South Asia. The India vs. Pakistan rivalry is arguably the most watched sporting fixture on Earth, with audiences regularly exceeding 1 billion viewers.

How Cricket Works
Cricket is played between two teams of 11 players. One team bats while the other fields and bowls. Batters score runs by hitting the ball and running between wickets. The fielding team aims to dismiss all 10 batters.
How It Works
- 1The batting team sends two batters onto the field at a time
- 2The bowling team delivers the ball from each end alternately (in overs of 6 balls)
- 3Batters score runs by hitting the ball and running to the opposite end
- 4Batters are dismissed by being bowled, caught, run out, LBW, or stumped
- 5An innings ends when 10 batters are dismissed (all out)
Scoring
Runs are scored by running between wickets (1 run each time), hitting the ball to the boundary (4 runs), or over the boundary on the full (6 runs).
