Lionel Messi
Biography
Lionel Andrés Messi is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time. Born in Rosario, Argentina, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at age 10. FC Barcelona agreed to pay for his treatment in exchange for him moving to Spain — a decision that would reshape the sport.
At Barcelona, Messi evolved from a promising youth player into a generational talent. Between 2009 and 2012 he won four consecutive Ballon d'Or awards — a feat then unprecedented. He went on to win eight in total, shattering records that seemed permanent. His partnership with Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta produced arguably the greatest football club side ever assembled.
For years, the only blemish on Messi's record was his international career. Argentina reached the World Cup final in 2014 and Copa América finals in 2015, 2016, and 2019, losing all of them. Then came the 2021 Copa América — Argentina's first major trophy in 28 years — and finally, in 2022, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Messi's tournament — 7 goals, 3 assists, including in the final against France — was a masterpiece of sustained excellence under the most intense pressure.
Messi moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and then to Inter Miami in 2023, where he continues to inspire. His technical excellence — close control, vision, left foot, free kicks — combined with his intelligent movement and stamina make him, to many, the most complete footballer in the history of the game.
